It can be annoying if you’re trying to upload an image on Imgur and you see the “This Image Failed to Process” error.
The error typically can also look like this. {“Success”:false,”Error”:5,”ErrorMessage”:”Failed to upload image; an error occurred on the server”}.
There are many reasons why your image won’t upload on Imgur. Usually, it’s because you’re trying to upload an image with a file that’s too big or isn’t supported by Imgur.
In this article, I’m going to explain why Imgur is saying “This image failed to process” and what you can do to fix the problem.
Imgur Server is Down
One of the main reasons why Imgur failed to process your image is because Imgur’s servers are down. When their servers are down, their servers aren’t able to process any requests.
Sometimes their servers go down because there are too many requests on the site or they are having problems with their systems.
To know if Imgur is down you can just check DownDetector. When the site is down, many people will report that the site isn’t working for them at a particular moment in time.
This will cause high spikes in the graph. If you do see these then you can confirm that the site is actually down. Typically, when a site is down, it only takes a few hours for them to fix it.
Imgur isn’t down very often so it’s unlikely that the error “Imgur This Image Failed to Process” is because of server problems. It’s typically for the other reasons I’ve listed in this article.
Just Wait
In most cases, if you just wait a few hours or up to a day, you will be able to upload an image normally without seeing this sort of error.
Waiting usually gives time for Imgurs developers to fix whatever problems are going on with the site. Typically, this will be fixed within a day.
The error could also be a glitch which could be fixed if you just wait a while, leave the site, and go back on it the next day. Sometimes the best solution is just time.
Check File Size
You need to make sure that the file size isn’t too large for Imgur to process. When files are too big, the server may not be able to handle them, hence why it may have failed to process.
You can upload images that are any larger than 20 MB. If the file is too big then the image won’t process. You can check the size of the file using a file size checker.
You can crunch the file to make it smaller by using a compressor. Once the image has been crunched, you can go and try to upload it to Imgur and it should work now.
Check if the File is Supported by Imgur
If your image file isn’t supported by Imgur then it will not be able to process or upload the picture. There are only a few kinds of files the site can upload.
For example, you can only upload these kinds of images:
- JPEG
- PNG
- GIFs
Any other type of file won’t be able to be processed by Imgur. If you don’t know what type of file your image is then you can use a file format checker. Typically, most images will fall into these 3 categories I listed above.
Try Uploading in Different Formats
If the format of the image that you’re trying to upload isn’t working then you should try uploading an image of a different format.
Sometimes, Imgur can have trouble unloading a particular format at a certain time or due to a bug or glitch in its software.
When this happens, your best bet is to convert the image to a different file format and try updating it that way.
You can use a file converter for this. Once you have converted it, go back into Imgur and upload the file.
Clear Browser Cache
It could be that your browser is having an issue at that moment in time. If you don’t clear the cache of your browser often enough then bugs can get stored on there and stop regular functions of certain websites.
Chache is just stored files that are used to make the function of your web experience better. It remembers things you have done in the past and shortcuts you so you don’t have to do it again.
When they get outdated, they can store bugs which can cause the “This Image Failed to Process”
To Clear Browser and Cookies:
- Go to your Chromes Browser menu
- Click on More
- Click on More Tools then Clear Browsing Data
- Choose a time range. If you want to delete everything then click All Time
- Check the cookie and cache box
- Select Clear Data
Use a Different Browser
If clearing the cache didn’t work then trying a new browser like Firefox could do the trick. Sometimes the issue could be with the browser itself.
If there are still caching issues then I would try that instead and see if it does the trick. If the browser isn’t loading properly on your device to, trying to upload the image to Imgur on a different browser could work.
Delete Some Images
If you have uploaded too many images on your Imgur account, you could have taken up too much space. Deleting some images can free up space and prevent errors like this from happening.
Make sure that you only get rid of the irrelevant images you don’t want or need and this will leave space for the picture that you want uploaded to be processed.
When there isn’t much space on your account, it can prevent Imgur from doing certain things. I would also make sure you crunch those images to reduce file size further.
Connect Using a Cable
Sometimes, if you are using a wireless connection, it could be a network error that is causing the upload error to occur. When there is a network problem or internet-related problem, it can cause errors like this to occur.
I would advise you to use an ethernet cable to connect your PC or device to the internet. I would also check to see if your internet connection is working properly.
When your internet is down, Imgur cannot upload images to their server. If you are using mobile data try wifi and vice versa.
Also, check your router and restart just to make sure that that isn’t the lead cause. Your wifi bars should be full or close to full.
Contact Support
If none of the above methods have done anything to fix the problem then you will need to contact Imgur support. To contact support go to their support page and Submit a Ticket.
Once you’re on this page:
- Select the “I found a site issue/bug” option
- Now put in your email address and all the other information marked with an asterisks Imgur is asking you for.
- Now add a screenshot of the error in the attachment section of the page
- Select Submit
From here, you should get a response from Igur in a few days getting back to you on how you are able to solve the problem. Sometimes, you might not even get a response at all.
But in most cases, they should tell you how to get around the problem or ask further questions if none of the methods above helped you at all.

Hopefully, you are now able to upload an image. If you still can’t and you’re still seeing “This Image Failed to Process” your best bet is to wait.
Before you just sit around and wait, you should first make sure that the file is supported by Imgur before you do anything else.
Make sure that it’s at least a JPEG, GIF, PNG, and so forth. You will also need to make sure that the file size isn’t too large.
If all of these things have been checked, you can either wait and try uploading the image the next day or contact support and they will be able to guide you on the best next steps.
